Parent Advisory & Family Support Committee

The Parent Advisory and Family Support Committee members represent Northern Lights Special Education Cooperative member districts and work in conjunction with the Northern Lights Interagency Council. The group is comprised of parents, county and school personnel who organize resources and support for families of children and students with disabilities. Meetings also include updates on current special education topics and how the information relates to services for families and children. The parent advisory committee meets 4 times per year immediately before the Northern Lights Interagency Council meeting or at an alternative date. For more information, contact the Director of Special Education at 218-655-5018.

Parents supporting Parents

The Parent Advisory and Family Support Committee has volunteer parents of children with disabilities as contacts for other parents in our 12 district cooperative. The main responsibility as a parent contact is to provide support to other parents of children with disabilities. If you are interested in being a parent coach, please contact the Director of Special Education, Dena Hagen at  218-655-5018. Information shared with other parents would be your name, phone, email and disability area of your child.

Parents of children with special needs -
We have information in one booklet you'll want to check out!

Every child is unique and learns in different ways.  If your child has been identified as needed special education services to support his or her learning at school, you can play a major role in shaping the services your child receives.
We have compiled resources useful to parents in one place!

The Parent Resource Booklet has information regarding:

  • Special education overview
  • County based services
  • Behavioral/mental health services
  • Community based resources
  • Advocacy
  • Preschool/school age resources and childcare
  • Assistive Technology
  • Child Development resources

Download the Parent Resource Booklet here!  Or go to www.nlsec.org/parents for a place to start.
